2026 Reorganization Caucus & Election of Officers
December 24, 2025
Pursuant to section 8.1 of the Democratic Party of Virginia's Party Plan, local committees are required to reorganize every two years. The Newport News Democratic City Committee will hold its reorganization caucus on Wednesday, January 7, 2026 at Sister Cities of Newport News, 11820 Merchants Walk Suite 100, Newport News VA 23606. Doors will open at 6:30 PM and close at 7:00 PM.
Election of officers will occur immediately upon the adjournment of the reorganization caucus at the same location. Only those attending the reorganization will be able to vote at this meeting with the exception of Democratic elected officials as stated in the party plan. Those wishing to seek election as officers must file with Philip Whitman, Chair, and Tahnisha Clark Hines, Secretary, by 5:00 PM on Friday, January 2, 2026.

2025 Democratic Primary Filing
March 19, 2025
The filing period for candidates seeking to run in a June Democratic primary election opened at noon on March 17. The deadline to file is 5:00 PM on April 3; no late filings will be accepted.
Candidates must present receipt for primary fee filing, declaration of candidacy, and notarized petitions of qualified voters.
Candidates for Newport News Commissioner of the Revenue, Commonwealth's Attorney, Sheriff, or Treasurer, as well as Virginia House of Delegates District 70, must file with NNDCC Chair Phil Whitman (nndemocrats@gmail.com).
Candidates for Virginia House of Delegates District 85 must file with HD85 Nominating Chair Gene Magruder (genemagruder@aol.com).
